Gender and Race in Poverty
People who live below the poverty line are generally classified as women or people of an ethnic minority. While this can be the case, the media exaggerates it, says Kate Butler on Suite101.com. She says, “The mainstream media presents those who live in poverty as being inherently different from the rest of society by creating artificial divisions and dissimilarities.” Are women and people of an ethnic minority more likely to be below the poverty line than men? Does the media affect how we as a society view those who suffer from poverty? "Portraying Poverty in the News"
